The Gugulethu Tenors, consisting of Mpendulo Yawa, Siyabulela Gqola, Loyiso Dlova & Xolani November, have been performing together, belting out their favourite operatic pieces, since they left Fezeka High School seven years ago. The lads share a passion for opera, a bold music choice in a society infatuated with hip hop and kwaito.
According to Loyiso, when they started singing operatic music at school and on their own, they received a few sideway glances from their friends and fellow pupils: “Hey, this was Gugs after all. We didn't pay any attention to those funny looks. We motivated ourselves and pushed to become better at that."
Mpendulo: "I enjoy all genres of music, but opera was certainly distinct from all other types. Kwaito is about entertaining, but opera is about feeling"
The four of them fell in love with opera at Fezeka music school where their teacher played a crucial role in influencing them and encouraging their passion. "Even when we were in school we used to sing opera-stuff and church gospel music."
They have performed for President Nelson Mandela on Robben Island, as well as the late Joe Modise, then Minister of Defence, at his corporate offices of Labat in Johannesburg, as well as countless other corporate functions.
