Aubrey Lodweyk was born and raised in Rustenburg in the North West Province. From an early age he sang in his local Church Choir as soloist and participated in many choral eisteddfods. After matriculating he studied music privately with Unisa and Trinity College of Music. In 2003 to 2005 he studied at the Tshwane University of Technology obtaining a National Diploma in Vocal Art Performance. While at this institution he was given the opportunity of participating in student productions where he sang the following roles: ‘Dr. Malatesta’ in ‘Donizetti’s Don Pasquale’, ‘Tesoriere’ in ‘Verdi’sUn Giorno di Regno’. In 2005 he sang the title role in ‘Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi’.
In 2006 he joined the Cape Town Opera Studio and enrolled for a Post Graduate Diploma in Music Performance at UCT. He understudied the role of ‘Schaunard’ in ‘Puccini’s La Boheme’ by Cape Town Opera and sang the role of ‘Gullielmo in ‘Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte’. In 2007 he sang the following minor roles; ‘Silas’ in the South African opera ‘The Orphans of Qumbu’, ‘Rambaldo’ in ‘Puccini’s La Rondine’ and De Bretigny in Massenet’s Manon. Healso understudied the role of ‘Papageno’ in the William Kentridge production of Mozart’s opera‘The Magic Flute’ . Oratorio performances include the ‘Schubert Mass in C’ and G.F. Handel’s Messiah.
Besides operas he also sings regularly in concerts,soirees, wedding and lieder recitals. He sang in the Cape Town Festival classical concert and also sang in the Gauteng Choristers 8 years of Musical Excellence Concert. (the concert DVD got nominated for a 2008 SAMA).
