SHANTY
Based in Cape Town
The band Shanty has been together for many years, and are the leading exponents of traditional Irish music in Cape Town. They also write their own material and perform a variety of folk music from other English-speaking countries. The name Shanty is derived from the Irish gaelic "sean-tigh", meaning "old house". Early Irish immigrants to America (like the Kennedys) lived in the old parts of towns such as Boston, and so became known as "shanty-dwellers". MORE
